The F.J. Holden has been described as an 'anti-quest' Road Movie, whereby the protagonists spend all of their time driving, yet never actually geting out of the boundary of suburban Sydney. However, the characters in the film are realistic because they reflect the social problems faced by teenagers, whch was protrayed by the central protagonists, Anne and Kevin in their relationship in The F.J. Holden.
P. P. McGuinness states; "...The very sparseness of the detail of that relationship is the very esssence of the film - it is very much a matter of emotionally barren, but none the less real, contacts between suburban kids which reflects the materially rich but aimless mileu in which they live".
